President Trump has on numerous occasions said that the crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border is unsustainable. Trump has also indicated that he would be willing to shut down the border in order if necessary. At least, originally.
In a sudden change of rhetoric, Trump now claims that he will give Mexico one year to find a way to keep illegal drugs from entering the United States. If Mexico fails, the border closes.
“That will be a very powerful incentive,” Trump shared adding that “I will do it,” and “I don’t play games.”
Trump’s change of heart is currently credited to two sources: His administration warning about the economic fallout that would accompany closing the border and Mexico stepping up efforts to detain illegal migrants.
It will be interesting to see how Mexican officials reply to the declaration.
