House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has requested President Trump to cancel his State of the Union address or write a letter to Congress.
“Sadly given the security concerns and unless government re-opens this week, I suggest that we work together to determine another suitable date after government has re-opened for this address or for you to consider delivering State of the Union address in writing to the Congress on January 29th,” Pelosi wrote.
Pelosi justified her request by claiming that the partial government shutdown draws security concerns as the Secret Service and Department of Homeland Security officers are currently unpaid.
There is yet to be any response from either the Secret Service or Department of Homeland Security regarding Pelosi’s letter.
House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer has recently informed CNN that the State of the Union was effectively canceled.
“The State of the Union is off,” Hoyer said insisting they will not reschedule it until President Trump reopens the government.
However, on January 6th President Trump stated, “I will be making the State of the Union on January 29th. And I look forward to it. I look forward to it. And I look forward to speaking, really, before the world. We have a lot of great things to say. Our country is doing better than any country in the world, right now.”
Will President Trump deliver his State of the Union address as scheduled or will the Democrats win this battle?
