The FBI have arrested the leader of a group that has taken it upon themselves to keep their border safe from illegal immigration.
69-year-old Larry Hopkins of Sunland Park, New Mexico was arrested by the FBI after Democratic Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham ordered an investigation.
The investigation was prompted the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) accusing Hopkins and the United Constitutional Patriots (UCP) of illegally detaining migrants.
UCP spokesperson Jim Benvie shared that the group has been aiding the U.S. Border Patrol with record numbers of illegal migrants crossing the border by detain over 5,600 migrants, just in the last two months. The UCP patrol the border and when they identify migrants trying to illegally cross the group holds them until U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers arrive.
Yet the ACLU called the UCP a “fascist militia.” Other critics accuse them of impersonating law enforcement and crowdfunding sites PayPal and GoFundMe have banned the group from using their services.
However Benvie states that the group of half a dozen members, mostly military vets, said they are only trying to aid local authorities and if state police ordered them to leave they most likely would. If the UCP feels its rights have been violated they will resolve the matter in the courts of New Mexico, not a battlefield.
“There’s not going to be any standoffs, this isn’t the Bundy Ranch,” Benvie said, speaking of armed confrontation that took place in Nevada during 2014.
